Statement Regarding Trump Administration Plans to Bar Transgender Individuals From Military Service
July 30, 2017

Penn Law’s LGBT community strongly opposes President Trump’s recent decision to ban transgender people from serving in the military.  This reversal of the Obama Administration’s inclusive policy runs contrary to President Trump’s promise to support the LGBT community and discriminates against transgender people, including those who have selflessly served this country in the military.  Moreover, research published by the RAND Corporation refutes the President’s cited fiscal and social rationale for the decision.

Penn Law Lambda stands in solidarity with the transgender community.  We are currently planning events for the coming year that will highlight developments regarding transgender rights and encourage important discourse in this area.

In solidarity,
Penn Law Lambda

Statement on Withdrawal of Federal Protections for Transgender Students

February 24, 2017

Penn Law's LGBT community strongly condemns the Trump administration's recent withdrawal of protections for transgender students. We are deeply saddened and concerned for the safety of transgender youth in public schools and the attack this represents on the entire queer community.

Transgender youth face higher levels of bullying, harassment, and suicide and drop out of school at an elevated rate. It is imperative that they receive the legal protections of Title IX which prohibits sex discrimination in education. Every child deserves the benefit of a nurturing, harassment-free education that sets them up to succeed in life.

Penn Law Lambda stands with Gavin Grimm, plaintiff in G.G. v. Gloucester County School Board. Gavin is a transgender young man currently suing his school board for its discriminatory bathroom policy separating transgender students from their peers. The Supreme Court will hear his case on March 28th.

Lambda is currently planning several events related to transgender legal issues, including hosting Jessica Lynn, a transgender woman who was stripped of custody of her children because of her gender identity. We invite the Penn Law community to join us and continue the conversation on transgender rights.

In solidarity,
Penn Law Lambda

Statement Regarding the 2016 Election Results
November 9, 2016

"Surprise" might be an understatement. "Shock" might be a better term for most of us at Penn Law. But in the Lambda family, there is definitely a taste of fear after yesterday's elections.

American voters have spoken and have chosen a party whose platform removes the LGBT community and our oppressed brother and sister communities from the nation's top priorities. But this isn't a reason to give up. Penn has given all of us unique skills and drive to speak our minds and keep fighting for social equality. If Marsha Johnson had simply accepted negative outcomes as inevitable, she never would have thrown the brick that gave birth to the modern Pride movement. It would be an insult to our predecessors to give in to defeat now.

Lambda, and we hope all of Penn's affinity groups and supporters, will continue to advocate protections for the LGBT community. We will keep informing people of issues and realities that we don't all experience directly. And we want to thank all of Penn Law's allies for your love and support.

As we fight on, we must also mourn and recognize that some of us need additional support in a time that brings uncertainty and fear. We encourage you to reach out to us and each other. The LGBT Center is open to anybody who wants to stop by today, if even for snacks and beverages. The LGBT Center is located at 3907 Spruce Street.

If you'd allow us a brief shameless plug, we'll be discussing exactly how to continue moving forward with a discussion on Civil Rights Litigation on Friday, November 11 and the future of LGBT Rights in a Trump Administration next Tuesday, November, 15.

Again, thank you all for the work you put into this election. Our community is here and we refuse to be invisible again.
